Days after the birth of my first daughter, my Ukrainian Grandmother (my Baba) passed away. I was unable to fly to attend her funeral and although I will always feel like she knows everything I need her to know - I will also always feel like I wasn’t there for her. Or for my own mother. My last memories of her are of her smiling - not laying in a coffin. She remains in my mind + heart as she always was. She was a very small, but tough + adaptable woman with ages of wisdom, character, stories and old world tricks. She is unforgettable.
This beautiful snowy owl - suspended in quiet flight in a winter sky reminds me of how her memory sits in my heart. Suspended. Her best. Her spirit. Not her last days or her stroke or her declining abilities. Her best self.
