A symbolic element of flight - a collection of bird paintings would not be complete without their feathers. Used in smudging - a feather brushes spirits and smoke to purify a physical space. The ashes from a smudging ceremony are sometimes spread at the doorway of a home to alert evil spirits that they are unwelcome and protected against. Traditionally - eagle or hawk feathers are used HOWEVER this is a painting of a crow feather, distinguishable from a raven feather by it’s rounded tip - because of the rich and historic use of crows to symbolize a broad spectrum of contrasting ideas; death, joy, prophecy, evil, trickery, filthiness, happiness, royalty. I was originally worried about being accurate when representing aboriginal cultures and then I remembered that I am representing myself and my ideas within my paintings.
This black crow feather on a white background is representative (in my mind) of the yin yang. Forces of good and evil. Another aspect that I see and respect in birds - their beauty and viciousness. Their silence and deafening magic.
