This is quite possibly the best pumpkin carving I have EVER SEEN. AND what makes it even more delightful to me is that this talented carver is from right here. His name is Robert Leclair and he's a retired school teacher who's teaching carving classes RIGHT NOW at Lee Valley. His daughter Mélanie sent this picture of his latest project and she says he also teaches carving in bark. I betcha if you gave him a block of butter he could work some magic there, too. Mr. Leclair - I crown you the BEST PUMPKIN CARVER I HAVE EVER SEEN. I realize I have no clout or authority in the pumpkin carving world, but I have an eye for these things. I hope that's okay.
I must confess... I love his pumpkin because it's pure carving wizardry AND because it's not scary. I'm not a big fan of scary things... rollercoasters, walking in dark forests, BASEMENTS, sharks, murder mysteries, letters from the government OR HALLOWEEN. If tonight was Dress-Up-Like-Your-Favourite-Stuffed-Animal-Night-And-I'll-Give-You-Candy then I would be totally onboard. BUT, there's gonna be 3 dozen kids at my door with fake blood and scary masks and giant swords... I don't really understand it. In all my years of trick-or-treating I was Little Bo Peep, I was a belly dancer (with my snowsuit on underneath my midriff baring outfit made from our kitchen drapes), I was a black cat at least 18 years in a row, and I was a walrus. I just don't like scary. (Okay, I know walruses can be pretty scary should you come face to face with one and their big moustache and spitting...)
In other news... Mavis (from Lucky Dog Biscuits) has taken it upon herself to get some screen prints made with the black & white baby designs I made. She's going to sew them into pillows for a little new person joining her family very soon. In order to get them screen printed - you've gotta produce in NUMBERS. She's gonna have WAY MORE than she will know what to do with. ANYBODY INTERESTED IN BUYING SOME OF THESE FROM HER? My black & white square design will be 8x8 inches screened onto a square of thick white cotton - about 10x10 inches. She's doing her favourite 5 designs and probably looking at selling them in SETS. You could make pillows or bags or whatever your heart desires with your versions. Please leave a comment or fire me an email if you're interested in buying a set of these puppies - then she and I can formulate some numbers and make dreams come true. ;) Mavis, I would like at least one set.
ADDED: This set includes the penguin, koala, moose, hedgehog, and octopus. We will sell a set for $30 CDN plus shipping to your destination.

We had dinner last night with Madeleine Albright. Okay it wasn't just us. We had a fancy dinner with 650 people and we were really, really privileged to hear Madeleine Albright speak. She's quite incredible. I completely enjoyed it. She was speaking at a private girls' school awards dinner and when she was very inspiring. Triple Arm Pump to Madeleine Albright, former US Secretary of State.
Today: I had the incredible gift of sleeping in a bit. I needed it and now I am awake and ready to roll on this gloomy day. PURE HARD WORK on the agenda until 3pm when I GET TO SEE THE BOTANICAL PAPERWORKS plantable stationery in person. Oh, and then it's Halloween and Crash and I will sit by the door for a while and hand out candies until Professor Dan gets home and can take over.
Since NOVEMBER is in full effect tomorrow - I've got a SPRING in my step and I'm ready to GO. GO!
