Life around here has changed. It almost went unnoticed - like a hidden rainbow after a barely rain. Suddenly, we went from a toddler-baby combo to three FULL-ON KIDS. This summer saw us wave goodbye to diapers and sippy cups and all that jazz. Cribs were long gone. And so were naps. And suddenly - the girls set the table, and helped with laundry. They carried groceries and played for hours BY THEMSELVES. They had conversations with each other like the oldest and sweetest friends. They got themselves a drink. They said things like, "thanks for dinner, Mama" and "don't forget to take your coffee, Mama". They flew like professional travellers. They spoke FRENCH (and a little Spanish thanks to Dora!) They had friends I didn't know and new music I'd never heard...
But it wasn't really until last weekend that I felt it. We went tobogganing (sometimes called 'sledding') and what had (for six year) been an exhausting activity with toddlers SUDDENLY BECAME SO MUCH FUN I DIDN'T EVER WANT TO STOP. The temperature was frosting, but mild, the snow swirled and floated like within a snow globe. We enjoyed our friends! We laughed. Dan and I laughed! The girls laughed. They carried their own sleds up the hills and zoomed like Olympic bobsledders on the way down. THEM. SELVES. Hooting and hollering as much as I was! Dan stood at the top of the hill to direct their sleds away from trees and poles and I stood at the bottom poised to throw my body weight on them so they wouldn't careen into the almost-frozen river.
It was winter at it's BEST and my heart was full. It was so incredibly fun!
The walk home was filled with exhausted "remember this?" and "did you see me do that?".
No one noticed the mama at the rear of the caravan silently sobbing into my scarf.
Dear Life: I have enjoyed every minute of these small people so far and have open arms for all that is to come.
DECEMBER: I'm challenging myself to post more often this month. I'm not sure why. I'm so grateful for 2013. I just need to share.
